Realignment

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1

Hopefully none of you will have had the misfortune of driving a car with wheels that were not aligned. It is very difficult to steer a car in that condition, not to mention dangerous. Although you hold the steering wheel straight, the car will pull to one side and you become a participant in an unwelcomed wrestling match. You are no longer in charge of steering the wheels in the direction you want to go; they now steer you into an unwanted route, taking control, whether you want it or not.

Since the temptation in the garden, we have been in a wrestling match with sin. We may think that we’re in charge of our own lives, but the enemy is steering us off course – often subtly – but no less dangerously. It is only when we come to faith in Christ that we realise how far we’ve strayed from the will of God. Our view of the road ahead changes as a realignment takes place in our heart, mind and spirit, causing our perspective, attitude and ambition to completely change in response.

As we go through this realignment, we realise that the offerings of the world cannot satisfy the soul. It is only the pure things of God, displayed through Christ Jesus, that can bring us fulfilment. The Holy Spirit guides us as we seek them out and then helps us to grow in them day by day, as we hand the steering wheel over to Him.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

The Lord Jesus showed us what it means to be kind, gentle, humble, patient. He helped us understand forgiveness, respect, empathy, compassion. Above all, He taught us the true meaning of love – guiding us towards heavenly attributes in an earthly life.

To seek the things that are above takes conscious effort because they no longer come to us naturally, as God intended. The pull of the flesh – our own will and desires – will always be a hindrance to spiritual growth, which is why we have to actively pursue these Godly attributes.

The working out of our faith takes actual work but with it comes the joy of living a life that brings honour and glory to God.
