Can’t Keep Quiet

For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20

It is almost impossible to keep exciting news to yourself. “I got the job!” “We got the house!” “My book is getting published!” “I lost 3lbs this week!” (Because sometimes it’s the little things). There are other things that we may speak out about, like a cause that we feel passionate about, or an injustice that has gone hidden for too long. Whatever the subject is, it’s something that we can’t keep quiet about any longer.

Following the resurrection of Jesus and His instruction to go and spread the gospel, Peter and John were out and about doing just that. They were telling everyone about Jesus, and they were doing it with gusto. Not everyone appreciated this good news that was being shared and some went to great lengths trying to silence the apostles, but it was impossible. They had amazing news to tell and keeping quiet about it just wasn’t an option.

That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3

John had seen the Son of God. He could testify to the truth of the Messiah and he wanted to proclaim it to everyone who would listen. Do we have that fire within us, that passion, that urgency to tell the incredible wonder of God’s goodness, mercy and grace? The hymn-writer penned it well, when he wrote:

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!
Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of His Word;
In God my Savior shall my heart rejoice.

May the love and sacrifice of Jesus take us to a place of such overwhelming gratitude and joy that we cannot keep quiet about the greatness of our God and the glories of His Word.
