The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. Matthew 6:22
The eyes are among the most remarkable parts of the human body — each one containing over one million light-sensitive cells, constantly working to draw in as much light as possible so that we can see clearly. It can be difficult to fully appreciate just how precious healthy sight is until it begins to fail. Talk to anyone living with macular degeneration, glaucoma, or cataracts, and they will tell you how profoundly life can be affected when that clarity starts to dim. A healthy eye truly is a gift.
In the same way, our spiritual eyes need to be healthy and clear in order to see all that the Lord reveals to us as we live out our daily lives for Him. God is the source of all light, and just as our physical eyes are designed to draw in as much light as possible, so our spiritual eyes should be open, eager to see everything He wishes to show us.
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus said to His disciples, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!” He was revealing who He was, who His Father was, and the truth of His Kingdom — to those who were ready and willing to look. And remarkably, through the Holy Spirit, He continues to reveal these same truths to us today. What an extraordinary privilege and blessing that is.
Yet this kind of seeing requires intention. Our spiritual focus can easily become clouded — distracted by the noise of the world, or dimmed by the worries and concerns of daily life. We must take care to guard our spiritual sight and keep it sharp.
Fix your eyes firmly on Jesus — the author and perfecter of our faith. As you do, your whole being will be flooded with His guiding light, illuminating every step of the path ahead.
