I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Luke 22:32
No one enjoys failure, and it is certainly not something we ever set out to experience. We are naturally driven to succeed, and yet failure finds us all at one time or another. When it does, we sometimes hear the familiar encouragement: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” It is a simple phrase, but it carries a truth worth holding onto — that failure doesn’t need to have the final word.
God does not view failure as a barrier to success. We can be sure of this because Scripture is full of men and women who stumbled and struggled in their walk with God, and yet the Lord continued to use them, guide them, and bless them. Failure, in God’s hands, is by no means the end of the journey.
Perhaps the most well-known example is Peter. Bold and passionate, he declared with complete conviction, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Yet within hours, that confidence had crumbled, and Peter found himself utterly broken by his own denial. But this was far from his end point. Jesus had already prayed for him, and Peter did indeed return — not only restored, but stronger, humbler, and bolder than before. His experience of failure deepened his faith and sharpened his commitment, so that he was later able to write with genuine authority:
Do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you. 1 Peter 4:12
Peter took the very thing that had broken him and used it to strengthen his brothers and sisters in Christ — exactly as Jesus had asked him to. His failure became a source of strength for others.
Take encouragement from Peter’s story. When failure comes — and it will — the key to coming through it, is not to let it overwhelm us. In His grace and patience, God waits for us to turn again, ready to be strengthened and restored.
Failure is not to be feared. We confront it honestly, accept it humbly, and trust that God can use our experience as an encouragement to those who need it.
