Faith, God's Power

Nothing is Impossible

In Genesis 18, God puts this question to Abraham – “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” Abraham wanted to believe, but Sarah was sceptical. Further on in Scripture, when Job was faced with this question, he replied, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). And when the prophet Jeremiah contemplated this, he exclaimed:

Across the Old Testament, there are echoes of this question and it is answered again and again – nothing is too hard for the Lord, nothing is beyond His reach.

In Luke chapter 1, we meet two very different women pondering the same truth. One is older in years and without children, not unlike Sarah. The other is a young virgin, engaged to be married. Both are asked to believe in something that, by every natural consideration, should be impossible. Yet both women experience a miraculous event. How did these two wonderful births happen? ‘For he spoke and it came to be’, or as the angel said to Mary, ‘Nothing will be impossible with God’ (v37).

The ASV translates that same verse in Luke 1 as – ‘For no word of God shall be void of power.’ God speaks and things happen – just look at Genesis 1, where verse after verse reads, ‘And God said… and it was so.’
