And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth. John 14:16
We all seek advice about something at one time or another, but very often we end up more confused because each person we ask gives us a different answer. Then there are the magazines and television adverts that bombard us with product advice for everything from cars to toilet roll, and insurance to breakfast cereal. When we shop online, it seems that every item has a starred review to help us make the best choice, but even they can be unhelpful at times, with one person saying what great value it is and the next person telling you not to waste your money!
The reality for some of us is that we will happily spend more time trawling reviews for non-essentials than scouring God’s word for life’s necessities. God wants us to talk to Him about everything that is going on in our lives. Everything from what house to buy or rent, what university to go to, what job to take, what church role or organisation to help with, or which battle to fight and which one to walk away from. God has an opinion – an extremely relevant opinion – because He has a tailor-made plan for each of us. However, we won’t know the plan, or His opinion, until we make Him part of the conversation.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:6
When we acknowledge God in all that do – having real communion with Him – we receive the promise of clear direction for the path ahead. The Spirit of God – the Helper – guides us into all truth, providing the help we need for every decision that we make.
When we feel overwhelmed by different voices telling us what to do, let us lift our voice to God and pray, ‘Holy Spirit, help me to discern your voice above all others, so that I would walk in Your ways.’
