A Good Heart

If the eyes are the windows of the soul then the mouth is the doorway of the heart. The things that we see and hear create feelings and emotions within our heart. The more intense the emotion is, the more likely we are to verbalise it. Strong feelings can be difficult to rein in and before the brain has had time to check the consequences, the mouth opens the door to the heart and words come tumbling out.

I would like to be able to say, that ‘my words declare the uprightness of my heart’ (Job33:3), but unfortunately, more often than I would like, my words declare the agitation/frustration/anger of my heart; not at all a pleasing reflection. On a daily basis, we all need to ask the Lord to create a clean heart within us, a heart that reflects His goodness, kindness, patience and love. We need to continually put off our selfish motivations and strive towards a Christlike nature, a nature that reflects the heart of God.

What we produce – either in word or in action – reflects the condition of our heart and the source of its influence. By meditating on God’s word, we are strengthening our hearts to reflect what is pure and lovely and honourable. For when our heart is good, our words will be good also.
