DEVOTION BY GUEST WRITER EMILY OWEN
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? Matthew 5:13
Someone described as ‘salt of the earth’ is reliable, solid, dependable. Did you know that calling someone ‘salt of the earth’ is echoing Jesus?
What about calling yourself ‘salt of the earth’? That’s what Jesus says his disciples are.
In Old Testament times, salt was used in sacrifices to the Lord. Salt was a part of daily diet. To ‘eat salt with’ someone meant to share their hospitality.
Just as salt was present in the meals and sacrifices in the Old Testament, just as salt is present in meals today, spiritual salt should be present in every aspect of our lives. Salt is necessary. It preserves, it heals, it flavours. Salt makes things better. Salt is you. We are called to make things better, in Jesus’ name.
How are you flavouring situations you encounter? Do you make them better? Do you bring Jesus in, remembering that you are his salt?
Something about salt; it is not responsible for getting itself to the food. Someone else puts it there but, once it’s there, it can do what it is meant to do.
Jesus is our Someone Else. He decides where his salt goes, we don’t have to do that, but wherever we find ourselves day-to-day, we are called to be salt. To bring Jesus in. To make things better.
Wherever he leads us, he wants us to bring him. To encourage people to see him, meet him, get to know him. To ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ (Psalm 34:8).
Where will he sprinkle you from his saltshaker today?
