For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. Luke 21:15
Have you ever been tongue-tied or found yourself with mind-freeze – not the ice-cream induced brain freeze, but the ‘I-don’t-have-a-single-thought’ kind? It’s a strange and not particularly nice feeling to be standing in front of someone, or worse still, a group of people, and your mind goes completely blank. Later on, of course, all manner of brilliant responses come to you, which is of little comfort once the moment has gone.
In Luke 21 Jesus is preparing all His followers for what lies ahead. He give advanced warning about the destruction of the Temple, as well as wars and persecution in the days to come. He also warned that some followers would face oppression, affliction and imprisonment. We have seen this in our own time. In fact, there probably isn’t a generation that hasn’t – and there will be more to come.
As much as we want to question why certain things take place, we cannot alter what God has ordained. In all His teaching, Jesus never sugar-coated the Christian life — there will be troubles, and we will face many different things. One of the things we should never fear, though, is the question of why we follow Jesus, for He has promised that He will give us both wisdom and words.
Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak. Exodus 4:12
As we yield to the Holy Spirit and give Him freedom to work in our lives, He will guide us into those promises and strengthen our faith, so that we can speak the right words at the right time.
The comforting truth we have is that the Lord meets us with wisdom in every situation. When things seem impossible, He provides the possible. When things appear chaotic, He provides the calm. When things look dark, He will always provide the light.
