Daily Life, God's Presence, Trust

Who’s Driving?

Today I would like you to picture your life as a car journey. The first thing I want to ask is: Is God in the car? If the answer is ‘yes’ then where abouts in the car is He sitting? Is He relegated to the back seat while you grip the steering wheel, frantically trying to navigate the road ahead? Perhaps He’s in the passenger seat, occasionally consulted but not truly in control? Or worse, is He in the boot along with the other emergency supplies, only to be taken out in a crisis?

When we open the door of our lives to God and invite Him in, He’s not just coming along for the ride; He wants us to trust the route He has chosen. Yet we often become backseat drivers, protesting, “This isn’t the road I wanted to take, Lord!” We complain about the journey and question His route choices.

When we set off on this journey with God, trusting Him is vital because we will encounter every kind of weather along the way. Sometimes fog will cloud our vision, making the road ahead uncertain. Other times, icy conditions will require careful navigation so that we don’t plough ahead with spiritual recklessness. During unpredictable conditions, anxiety can creep in, but peace comes from knowing that God is in control.

We may all have a different map for the journey, but in travelling with God we will all arrive at the same destination. There will be bumps and diversions along the way, but every road we take has purpose and opportunity, and we will have the company of fellow travellers along the way.
