I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae. Romans 16:1
In just two verses, Paul introduces us to a remarkable woman called Phoebe. Though mentioned only once in the Bible, her example speaks volumes about quiet faithfulness and godly service. Paul’s words suggest that Phoebe carried great responsibility and even greater trust.
Paul calls her ‘our sister,’ identifying her as a beloved member of God’s family. She wasn’t famous, but she was faithful – a woman of character, compassion, and commitment to the work of the church in Cenchreae. Described as a deacon or servant, Phoebe may have held an official role of leadership, or she may simply have been known as someone who served tirelessly. Either way, Paul’s commendation reveals someone of spiritual maturity, with a deep care for others, and he urges the Roman believers to –
Welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well. Romans 16:2
Paul’s words remind us that hospitality and love toward fellow believers – especially those we do not yet know – should be characteristic of the Christian community. As Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).
Phoebe was a benefactor, a generous supporter of many, including Paul himself. We can imagine that she opened her home to fellow believers, helping and supporting them in whatever way she could. Like many others who quietly shaped the early church, Phoebe’s legacy is service – done not for attention, but for Christ.
What we learn from Phoebe, pulls together some of the thoughts we have looked at throughout this month, regarding our service to the Lord. Phoebe worked diligently behind the scenes, using the resources that God had blessed her with, for the blessing of others. She was a quiet servant, who exercised her faith in humble obedience.
Like Phoebe, let us use our time, our ability and our resources, to bless others and strengthen the church, for the glory of God and for His kingdom.
