For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:5
Earlier this year a video clip from a concert went viral. A concert camera was capturing live footage of random people and displaying it on the big screen for all to see. The viral clip showed a couple standing affectionately together, swaying to the music. When they realised they were looking at themselves on screen, their whole demeanour changed. The woman hid her face and turned away while the man ducked out of sight. Why would they do that?
The Lord … will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. 1 Corinthians 4:5
Are the purposes of our hearts always walking in the light? If we’re being honest, we know that we don’t always do the right thing and our best intentions can often let us down. There’s a difference, though, between trying to do what is right and knowingly/intentionally doing what is wrong. The couple at the concert knew what they were doing was wrong – they were married, but not to each other. The light found them. The light exposed their sin.
If we knew a camera was following our every move; if the world was watching us on the big screen, would we act differently? Are we hiding things that we don’t want others to see; giving in to temptations that would bring shame if exposed? The devil knows our weaknesses and he will use them to try and pull us into the dark. Do not give him that opportunity.
The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light. Romans 13:12
What a sight that would be – every Christian standing in armour of light, pushing back the darkness and leading the lost back to God.
As Christians, we are all children of light, children of the day. Amen. May the light of God’s goodness fill you today.
