The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8
Hezekiah ruled for 29 years in Judah and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He held fast to the Lord. He did not depart from following him. And the Lord was with him; wherever he went out, he prospered (2 Kings 18:6-7). Midway through his reign, Hezekiah became gravely ill, but because of his prayers, the Lord healed him and added 15 years to his life. The king of Babylon heard of the illness and sent an envoy with a gift for the king. Out of pride, and possibly as a show of regained strength, Hezekiah showed the envoy all his riches and all that was in his storehouses. This act displeased the Lord and He said to him, “All that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left” (Isaiah 39:6).
Possessions mean nothing. Today they are here, tomorrow they are gone, but God’s word is firmly fixed in the heavens (Psalm 119:89). Our lives are not to be built on what we own, for while they may contribute to some idea of status and our place in the world, they do not make a difference to our status with God. God may have blessed us with good things to be used for His good purposes, but the things themselves are still only temporary. Our lives are to be built on the lasting and eternal word of our God, for as Jesus confirmed, everything else will pass away ‘but my words will not pass away‘ (Matthew 24:35).
Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God. 1 Peter 1:23
Everything in this life is perishable, but the abiding word of God will stand forever. Don’t build on the things that will perish and don’t place your hope in the things that fades away.
You were created by the Word and born again through the Word, so stand firm in the wonderful, living, eternal and imperishable word of God.
