Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13:1
I brought a devotion on this verse back in October 2020, during a time when regulations were changing from week to week and it was extremely difficult to keep up with all the various restrictions. The world had been caught off guard and governments around the globe were trying their best to deal with an unpredictable event. Providing strategies to deal with all that was going on was far from straightforward. There were disagreements, frustration and belligerence, which led to rules being ignored.
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors. 1 Peter 2:13
The bible teaches that we should fear God and honour the governing authorities. All authority comes from God and those that exist have been instituted by Him, therefore, we need to respect those who lead and govern us. The only exception to this is when the world’s laws are in opposition to God’s sovereign commands. The Christian voice should not be silent when God’s ways are being altered; His truth needs to be made known and we need to stand firm in our conviction – but it should always be done in a godly and dignified way.
I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4
We live in challenging times. The generation before us lived in challenging times, as did the generation before that, and there is absolutely no doubt that the generation to follow will not find things any easier. Year on year, decisions are being made, bills are passed into law and the fabric of God’s truth is snipped away at, bit by bit. We may feel that we are fighting a losing battle, but that doesn’t mean we walk away from the fight. We keep speaking truth, we keep praying for our leadership, and we keep seeking for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Pray that those who lead and govern us would do so with wisdom, but more importantly, let us pray for their salvation.
