For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19
What a contrast between the man who wanted to be more than he was and the man who became so much less than he was. The action of the first triggering the action of the second.
Adam and Eve had no idea what the consequences of their actions would be, but then, how could they, possibly? Their knowledge of the event was simply in that moment. God said, “do not” but they chose ‘to do’ and the regret was instantaneous.
The ramifications of that event were catastrophic. We have not only suffered because of their sin; we have added to it exponentially. Adam couldn’t see the future; he couldn’t see the devastation that one act would produce. Would foresight have changed things? I would like to think yes, absolutely!
Most of us do not wish to harm, or see harm done to others. If we thought for one second that something we were about to do would bring deep hurt and distress to others, we wouldn’t do it. All actions have consequences, whether good or bad. Some will be unforeseen – for we can’t see the future – but other times we should pause and think if we are doing something for the right reason – something that’s right, in the eyes of God.
If God is saying – Don’t – we need to take heed, because He can see the future. The choice will always be ours, but if we trust in His guidance and His direction, He will never steer us wrong.
