Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
Eighty years ago today, a baby girl was born and named after her daddy. Her name was Roberta. She struggled physically from a young age but nothing stopped her kind and generous spirit. By the time she was sixteen, she was visiting those who were unwell, in hospital or in their homes. This continued practically her whole life, for as long as she was able, and those she couldn’t visit, she wrote to – sending get-well and thinking-of-you cards, that couldn’t be counted. She was a blessing to many. She was my greatest blessing, my perfect gift from God. She was my mum and I celebrate her today.
God’s goodness is shown to us in many different ways and through each we see His immeasurable generosity. He is generous with His compassion and grace. He is generous with His love and kindness. He is generous with His forgiveness and mercy. He is generous in blessing, and good, good gifts. These should all be celebrated.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness. Psalm 145:7
The goodness of God is woven through every part of our lives. Through highs and lows, sadness and joy, challenges and celebrations, God is sovereign and He is good. It does us good to recognise His goodness day on day – in the small things we take for granted; in the beauty of His creation; in the friendships and the family that support us, encourage us and lift us up in prayer. Our lives are richer because of God’s goodness, and when we take time to celebrate that, we open ourselves up to a deeper appreciation of His immense love.
Pause for a moment and consider God’s goodness in your life, then praise Him for every good and perfect gift with which you have been blessed.
