The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” Luke 17:5
Everything about faith is continual. Continual learning; continual growth; continual commitment. Day by day, bit by bit, as we absorb God’s Word and the lessons that Jesus taught, we become spiritually stronger as our understanding of what He teaches, grows and develops. There are times when we might feel quite strong in our faith, and other times when we possibly feel a bit unsure. There may even be occasions when we imagine that if we had a report card, it would say, ‘Could do better.’
The truth is, no matter where any of us sit on the scale of faith, we probably feel that it is something we desperately need much more of. This was something that even the disciples experienced. They were with the Lord every day, learning and growing, but as He spoke to them about temptations that would surely come, they felt inadequate in their faith, and they didn’t hold back in asking for more. ‘Increase our faith, Lord. Give us more!’
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
Faith is the central part of our salvation and it is pivotal in our daily walk. You may have heard someone say, ‘I don’t know where I’d be without my faith’, or ‘my faith got me through it’. Maybe you’ve said it yourself, I know I have. So, if that’s the case, if faith is the key to everything that we face, it makes sense that we would need to tend to it, nurture it and make it stronger. We need to grow it and grow in it.
We could all do with more faith, and the only place to start is listening to Jesus and continually growing in the lessons that He teaches.
