Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. John 21:5-6
Simon, Andrew, James and John were trained in the art of fishing, most likely by their fathers. They may have chosen the profession or it may have been expected of them. They may have enjoyed it or they may have wished to be doing something on solid ground rather than unpredictable water. Regardless of why they were fishermen, God used what they knew to do miraculous things.
We may not be in the place we long to be or thought we would be right now, but that’s ok because God uses us where we are. He uses the resources that we have and works through the ability that He has given us. Sheriden Voysey* puts it like this, “God often does His miraculous work through the methods He’s placed in our hands.” *(ODB Nov ’24)
Even still, we can often think that we don’t have much to offer Jesus, let alone something that God could work miracles with. Sometimes, those thoughts can lead us to a place where we, unintentionally, shut ourselves off from God’s voice.
And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
If the disciples had closed their ears to the voice of Jesus when He said, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat’, there would have been no fish that day, but they heard and they acted. Can we hear His voice; are we even aware that He’s talking to us? If God is calling us to act, then the first step towards doing, is listening.
You may not know the reason why you are where you are, but God has always known that this is where you would be. Make yourself available to hear His voice and He will guide you in opportunities to see miraculous things happen.
Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance. Proverbs 1:5
