Bible Thoughts, Talking to Jesus

To Know Him Well

I absolutely love this story that takes place on resurrection Sunday. The risen Lord comes alongside two disciples who are making their way to Emmaus. They are discussing all that has happened, and when Jesus asks about their conversation, He sees the sadness in their eyes, but no recognition of who He is. So, starting with Moses and then the prophets, He explains all that is written in the Scriptures concerning the Christ. When they reach the village, the men ask Him to stay and eat with them. At the meal, Jesus lifted the bread, blessed it and broke it for each of them. In that moment, the veil was also lifted, and their eyes saw Jesus.

What a wonderful thing it is to have the spiritual cataracts removed from our eyes so that we can know Jesus in the fullness of who He is. What a privilege to come to the Lord’s table, to partake of the bread and the wine in remembrance of Him. In Emmaus, these two disciples recognised the Lord in the breaking of the bread. This wasn’t just head knowledge – knowing factually who someone is – this was heart and soul knowledge; it was intimate and personal.

When we come to the table of the Lord, do we see Jesus in all His fullness? Have we taken the time to soak up the Scriptures concerning Him that we might truly know Him in the depths of our spirit? Only by knowing Him intimately can we appreciate all that He accomplished for us on the cross and recognise the spiritual awakening that comes through His resurrection.
