And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” Luke 19:5
Being small in height can have advantages and disadvantages. I am 5ft 3 and my feet don’t touch the floor while on my own sofa, but on the plus side, leg-room isn’t an issue when flying economy. Zacchaeus was on the small side of the height-measuring-stick, which probably suited him well when he wanted to hide in a crowd. On the other hand, that same crowd was a bit of a nuisance when he couldn’t see over their heads, and on this particular day, he needed to see. Jesus was in town and Zacchaeus didn’t want to miss him. There was only one thing for it – he would have to make himself taller than everyone else.
So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. Luke 19:4
Zacchaeus had a need, and among all of the things that we learn about Jesus in the gospels, we know this: Where there’s a need, Jesus stops. So, when He reached the sycamore tree, he stopped, looked up and called Zacchaeus to come. “Hurry and come down.” Well, Zacchaeus didn’t need to be asked twice, and got himself down as quick as he could. Jesus was here and his life was about to change in ways he could never have imagined.
Do we still have this same enthusiasm to meet with Jesus? Are we still willing to do whatever it takes to spend time with him? Jesus sees the needs of our heart and his call to us is just the same – “Hurry and come.” Jesus, himself, never hurried, but there is an urgency for us not to delay in responding to the Saviours call, because change happens when we come to Him.
Whatever your need is today, bring it to Jesus. He is waiting for you to come.
