For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4
When Paul travelled from town to town sharing the gospel of Christ, his teaching came from the Old Testament along with his personal experiences and his encounter with the Lord. Paul wrote his letters to the churches with the compassion of Jesus and by the power of the Spirit. He wrote to encourage, to discipline, to strengthen, and to help the church grow in wisdom and knowledge.
I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. Colossians 1:26
Paul wrote for the building up of the church in his small corner of the world. I don’t think that even he could have imagined that what he wrote in former days would be read and gleaned for instruction, right across the globe. The Old Testament, the New Testament – scribed by men, inspired by God, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
The Bible is the greatest book that we will ever own. It has power beyond our comprehension: It provides hope in every situation, comfort in every trial and guidance through all that life brings. It can cause us to rejoice through the tears, it can bring calm in the middle of chaos and it constantly reminds us to trust in the One in whom all things hold together.
We need to keep our bible close at all times, for within its pages we find the wisdom to navigate this life, and the assurance of our eternal hope for the life yet to come.
