Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. Psalm 66:16
Sharing our faith with others and explaining to them the good news of the gospel can, for some, be a hard thing to do. Someone asks us a question and our minds go blank. We know there are lots of verses that would answer that question, but in the moment, we cannot think of a single one. We can become anxious or maybe even embarrassed, afraid of saying the wrong thing that might put them off God! We put pressure on ourselves by falling into the trap of feeling that we have failed in some way if the person we are sharing the gospel with doesn’t give their life to God right there and then. What we need to remember is that our commission is to go and tell, not go and save.
I am currently reading a book called ‘God Tells The Man Who Cares’ by A.W. Tozer, in which he reiterates this point, saying:
The Christian is not sent to argue or persuade, nor is he sent to prove or demonstrate; he is sent to declare “Thus saith the Lord.” When he has done this he makes God responsible for the outcome. No one knows enough and no one can know enough to go beyond this.
So, what do we know, and what can we say with conviction about God and about Jesus? Well, we know our own story, and one of the easiest ways to tell God’s story is by telling our own. We can sow God’s wonderful truths into the lives of others by telling them what He has done for us, then we let the Holy Spirit do His work.
If you ever feel anxious about discussing Jesus, then simply say, ‘Let me tell you what he has done for my soul.’
