Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14
Although Israel had been marching out boldly, they were not experienced in battle. As soon as they saw Pharoah’s army they were intimidated. But Moses reminded them that God was with them, and the fight would be won by God alone. The Israelites only had to be still, and then at God’s command move on.
One of the hardest things, for many of us, is to learn how to be still before God. Life is fast-paced and full of action, and that becomes our normality. We live moving from one activity to the next thing, and then the next. Constantly we are bombarded by sound, instructions, announcements, music, and online messages. Complete silence is rare, but spiritual stillness is not about peace and quiet. Being still in the presence of God is not a condition of our external circumstances. Although finding a place, and making space, to be quiet before God is a good practice to develop.
When we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us. It is in His presence that we find peace, inner calm, and stillness from knowing that God is in control. Then through the experience of difficult times, we learn to trust in God’s ever-present help and His unfailing love.
Being still in the presence of God, with the confidence and assurance of His love, becomes our starting point to move forward. Out of the stillness, we can face the impossible situation. Out of the stillness comes the strength to move forward. When we trust that God has the plan, the unknown becomes a place of possibilities! By fully trusting Him, delighting in His goodness, and being committed to following His way, it is possible to be still before God and to move forward at the same time.
We are not alone on this journey of faith – God is there with a plan to glorify His name in our lives. Are you willing today to let go of control, and give to God what He alone can hold? Prayerfully listen for His voice, take that step to move on, and see what God can do.
