Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 4:14
The God of the universe and designer of life did not have to come down and dwell among His creation, and yet He did. The King of kings did not have to come down as a humble servant, and yet He did. The Almighty God did not have to go through the degradation of humanity, and yet, He did. Why did He do that?
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (v15)
God the Son passed through the heavens and became the son of man to re-establish the connection with mankind, face to face, and restore the union which had been broken. In order to lead us back to the Father, He became like us physically, and experienced life mentally, just as we do. He showed how to walk in the ways of God, how to endure the hard, embrace the truth, and live as we were created.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (v16)
God understands everything about our lives, not just because He can see it, but because He has felt it. The fact that He can sympathize with our frailty is what makes His grace so sweet and His mercy so profound.
When circumstances unsettle us, we don’t let go of faith, we hold fast to Jesus – the great high priest – who has gone before us and intercedes for us in the throne room of heaven.
