Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” John 1:46
Every day, thousands of different people in different houses, offices and factories are all asking the same question, and it starts like this, ‘Have you seen…’ The end of the sentence varies greatly, from …my glasses, to …that old coin grandpa Bill left me. The amount of time spent looking for things must be colossal. It always makes me laugh, though, when someone says, ‘It’s always in the last place you look.’ Well of course it is, because you don’t continue looking for something once you’ve found it! There are times, however, when you’ve looked for so long that you resign yourself to never finding your lost item – then you hear those amazing words – ‘You won’t believe what I’ve just found.’ This is exactly what Philip said to Nathanael. Well, maybe not exactly, but close enough.
We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. John 1:45
For hundreds of years they had been looking for the Messiah and now they had found him. ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ Come and see said John to the people. Come and see said Andrew to Simon. Come and see said Philip to Nathanael. When was the last time we said these words to someone and introduced them to Jesus? Do we have the excitement that we see in Andrew and Philip – the excitement of finding the Messiah, the Saviour of the world?
Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds… Psalm 66:5
I have been challenged by this today and I have asked myself why I hesitate at times to say, ‘Come and see.’ There are so many people who still need to meet Jesus, to be introduced to him, so we need to take every opportunity that comes our way to do just that.
Father, help us to be bold and confident in bringing people to meet Jesus – Redeemer, Saviour, brother, friend.
