Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:5
It is very easy for western Christians to take the Bible for granted. We have easy access to it and, for a lot of us, we have a copy of various translations all sitting at our fingertips. How often, though, do our hands pick one up, and how many are just sitting gathering dust? In contrast, many eastern Christians long for the opportunity to read God’s Word in freedom, instead of by candle or torchlight. They devour whole passages, committing it to memory so that they can carry it in their hearts always.
When we love God’s Word and learn it, it enables us ‘to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ’ which in turn leads us into ‘speaking the truth in love’ (Ephesians 4:15). When we experience true love, God’s love, we can show it to others. When we come to know the truth of the gospel, we can share it with others. When we live in God’s abundant grace, we can carry it into the lives of others. But it is only possible to live in truth and grace when we love it and learn it.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8
If we want to prosper and have good success in our Christian walk, we need to meditate on God’s Word, day and night because, as the psalmist confirms, ‘the unfolding of your words gives light’ (119:130). The truth of the Word is a powerful thing and we need it alive and active in our lives.
Go beyond wanting to pick up your Bible, but rather, love it to the point of never wanting to put it down.
