And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” John 11:34
In the story of Lazarus, we are given more than a glimpse of the heart of Jesus. We see the immense depth of His love and concern for Martha and Mary in the tears that he shed, for he was ‘deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled’ (v33). He asked ‘where’ their sorrow lay, and they replied, ‘come and see.’
The Lord cares about the things that bring us sorrow. His love and concern for us is just as deep as it was for those two sisters. He wants to know where our sorrow lies; to each of us he says, ‘Show me; take me to the place that is causing you pain and distress.’
“Lord, come and see.”
When we invite the Lord into the place that holds our pain, our concern, our struggle, we are inviting the one who can bring about change. Jesus comes to us; he meets us where we are and he pours out his love and compassion and grace.
I am the resurrection and the life. (v25)
Where pain and sorrow are buried, Jesus can bring forth healing. When we bring Him into our worry and concern, he can lead us out to the still waters of peace and reassurance. If we invite Him to come and see, he has the power to resurrect joy back into our life.
Whatever you are going through, don’t leave it buried. Take the Lord to where it is and show him, for he alone can bring about change.
