From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 62:2
As a young child, I loved going to the beach with my granny and granda. One of my favourite places was Brown’s Bay, right at the end of Islandmagee. To the right of the bay is farmland which has a public path for a short distance along the coastline. My granda and I used to walk that path, and I couldn’t wait to get to the ‘big rock’ half way along so that I could climb up (with a little help) and stand on top. It felt great up there.
As an adult, any walk that leads me ‘to the top’ still feels great. The air always feels fresher, the surroundings feel calmer and the view gives a new perspective on everything below. Below is where we live every day, in among the hustle and bustle, the coming and going, and the constant to and fro. It’s a busy place with lots happening all the time and it is easy to get caught in the continual flow of it; easy to be worn down by it. On days like these, what we need is a walk to the big rock.
…when my heart is faint – lead me the rock that is higher than I.
When we go to the Rock, the view changes as we allow God to bring a clear perspective and a sense of calm to our surroundings. It is refreshing, up on the height, and we can carry that renewed energy and peace with us when we return to life below.
The Rock is there for us to go to, so don’t forget to take time out and go for a walk.
