And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. Jeremiah 32:38
We have a fundamental need to belong, for it is in belonging that we often experience a deep sense of value. Christians and non-Christians alike, can all go through periods of feeling that we are of no value; that we have nothing to offer. It may come from hurtful comments – either intentional or unintentional – or it may come from self-labelled inadequacies. When these feelings are left to fester, they can lead us to a very lonely place called ‘worthless’; but this place is a lie, for we are of worth to God.
God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
God the Father looks at us with compassion and mercy because He sees value in every one of us. With tenderness He calls us, for He longs to wrap us in His love. The Father sees every chip, every crack and every broken piece of our life, and what does He say? ‘Come to me, let me heal you, for I have big plans for you – plans filled with hope!’
We are God’s creation, and nothing that He made is worthless. The world has a skewed view of what true value looks like, which is why we never judge our worth by the world’s scale. Our true worth is assessed by the price that was paid for our redemption. When we look to the cross we see how valuable we really are.
In Christ we discover our sense of worth. In God we discover our sense of belonging.
