The Steersman

It is easy, at times, to get lost in the noise and chaos of life. There is so much happening around us, so much that we need to attend to. We plough ahead and our dependency shifts towards our own strength to get us through the day. A path that was once straight with a clear view now has a huge boulder on it and we don’t know whether to tunnel underneath or try to climb over it. Either way, it’s exhausting. On these days, when we feel that we don’t have a minute, we need to stop and take a breath; we need to ‘be still and know…’

The Lord knows about your day, your week, your month, but better still, he cares about your day, your week, your month. It is his love that holds us up and more often than not, holds us together, so a day without it doesn’t bear thinking about.

In today’s verse, the word ‘direct’ is the Greek word Kateuthuno which is made up from ‘Kat’ and ‘Euthuno’. The latter means, ‘the directing of a ship by the steersman’, and the word is then enhanced by the addition of ‘Kat’ which means, remove all hindrances in order to guide or direct’. When we allow the Lord to be the steersman of our heart, he is able to guide us, without hindrance, toward the love of God. Likewise, he is able to direct us in loving God as we should. The Lord is able to push through the clutter and the boulders of the day to show us and remind us of the steadfastness of Christ. He is beside us always and nothing or no-one can take that love away, or remove Christ from standing by our side.
