But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me. Micah 7:7
Micah was a prophet in Judah, and although he walked in the ways of God, he identified with the collective sin of the nation he belonged to. He understood God’s anger and his judgement, and he was prepared for the price they would pay. He says, “I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him.” He saw the fall of Israel to Assyria and it is probable that he saw his homeland of Judah fall to the Babylonians. He felt the darkness of sin all around him, but through it all, his confidence was not shaken:
Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me… He will bring me out to the light. Micah 7:8
Although we personally may be walking with God, like Micah we also live in an ungodly nation for which we need to pray. Micah walked in the hope of God’s love for his people, and as we live in the midst of a society which rejects God’s ways, we can feel secure in the sanctuary of his steadfast love towards his own. The devil might be trying to stir the darkness around us but we walk in the light of the Lord, which the devil can never extinguish.
Through everything that happens in the world around, we must never stop looking up. The God of our salvation stands against all that might cause us to fall. He hears our cry and upholds us by the power of his hand.
Look to the Lord in every circumstance; wait on him and trust in his constant faithfulness.
