I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 2 Timothy 1:5
From all that we read about Timothy, we know that the apostle Paul had a deep fatherly love for this young man. The only thing we know about Timothy’s actual father, is that he was Greek; his mother, however, was Jewish. Eunice faithfully attended Synagogue and told her son the stories of their forefathers and the commandments to Yahweh. This gave a young boy the foundation that he needed in order to become a young man for Christ and the gospel.
From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15
Eunice and her mother, Lois, heard Paul when he was travelling around Asia Minor (Turkey) on his first missionary journey. He was preaching a new and radical gospel concerning the Messiah and Eunice’s heart was open to receive this life-changing news. She became a believer, along with her mother and her son. On Paul’s second missionary trip, he was so heartened by the young disciple, Timothy, that he asked him to join the travelling ministry team.
What joy for a mother to see her son grow in faith and have someone like Paul take him under his wing. Eunice may not even have realised the important role she had played in her son’s life, yet she was the one who grounded him in Scripture and nurtured his knowledge of Almighty God. She was a woman of sincere faith who graciously passed it on.
Who are the children in your life – maybe grandchildren, nieces or nephews, a godchild? Your faith can be a positive influence on their young life, grounding them in the truth of God’s love for them. When the opportunity arrives, pass it on.
Never underestimate your ability to model godliness to a younger generation who are bombarded by worldliness.
