I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” Nehemiah 6:3
We are so easily distracted at times; so easily convinced to stop what we’re doing, take a short break, or attend to something far less important. Then we wonder why it has taken a week to complete a 2-day job.
Nehemiah was distraught when he heard that ‘the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.’ He cried, prayed and fasted until the Lord told him what to do. The walls and gates were to be rebuilt and Nehemiah would lead this charge. He got everything in order and then got to work, but not everyone was happy, and plans to disrupt the work began.
Has God laid a particular work on your heart, something that he has purposed for you to do? Have you started yet or still procrastinating, weighing up the pros and cons? Maybe you have started and are currently somewhere in the middle of it but other things are calling for your attention. Some interruptions are genuine, but we need to wary of things that try to take us away from God’s immediate purpose.
Nehemiah was committed to what God had put into his heart to do and he was determined that the work would not stop, for this was God’s work and God’s plans are always fulfilled. When he came up against opposition, he prayed, “O God, strengthen my hands.”
When God shows you his will, he also goes before you to prepare a way for his will to be done. Don’t let distractions pull you away from God’s purpose. Trust his leading and rely on his strength to see the work through to completion.
