Birth of the Christ, Prophecy

What’s in a Name?

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor… Isaiah 9:6

Counselors were a very important part of a king’s entourage in the Old Testament. Every palace would have a royal counselor who would serve as personal adviser to the king. They would guide the way in navigating difficult decisions through wisdom and discernment.

In 2 Samuel we read, ‘Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom’. But even though the counsel of men was relied upon heavily by David, he would later exclaim,

The LORD was David’s Wonderful Counselor.

This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom. Isaiah 28:29

Trust the Lord with every concern, every decision, every circumstance, and believe Him when he says, “I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder.” Isaiah 29:14

The Lord truly is our Wonderful Counselor, for he will guide us through every situation that we face, when we call on his Name.
