The Deep and The Depths

As it is written, ‘what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.’ 1 Corinthians 2:9

The apostle Paul follows the theme of wisdom and folly between God and mankind and points out that in our natural sinful state, we cannot see or understand the things of God.

Each of us have our own way of learning and we know what works best for us. Some people understand things by simply reading text; some need to hear things explained; some need something visual in order to tie facts together. Understanding God’s word, however, is in a whole different arena. The bible has been read by millions of people and a lot have dismissed it as nonsense because they cannot comprehend the truth of it. This is because God’s word is not simply understood through our own intellect; God’s word comes to life through spiritual discernment. Verse 9 is the lock but verse 10 is the key:

‘These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the deep things of God.’

What God has prepared for us is only fully revealed and understood by those who love him. It is impossible for a unrepenting soul to comprehend spiritual truths but the forgiven soul has communion with God through the Spirit. This is how we get those ‘lightbulb’ moments, because we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth. What a wonderful blessing and privilege it is for us to know the heart of God.
