Pleasing God, Serving Christ

Not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Ephesians 6:6

Paul is speaking here to those who are serving earthly masters and encouraging them to be good servants, to be sincere and not merely seeking approval for what they do. Seeking approval, though, is not reserved exclusively to the workplace, and can often be seen in everyday life.

People-pleasing is another casualty of needing to be liked and it can be born out of personal insecurities. The problem with that is what pleases someone one day might irritate them the next. The goal post constantly moves and the pressure to please increases each time. Pleasing others can be an unachievable goal, and whether it is done just to be seen or just to be liked, it is not God’s priority for us and it shouldn’t be our priority for ourselves.

Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called. Ephesians 4:1

God is the One we should want to please above all, walking in service to him so that his will would be done through all that we do.

At home, at work, or in the community, we are always serving Christ, and we should serve Him truthfully, honestly and with a sincere heart.
