A Good Seasoning

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:6

Sometimes we can look at a verse and think that it doesn’t really gel together, (or maybe that’s just me). I wondered how sprinkling my conversation with salt and grace would help me know how to answer someone. So, I looked at the original Greek which told me: ‘Your speech, always in grace, having been seasoned with salt, to know how it behoves you, each one to answer.’ That was much clearer, (not really). Now I look up ‘behoves’ – dei – meaning, necessary; it is what must happen, what is absolutely necessary. This is when the lightbulb in my head started to switched on. Grace + Salt + Necessary answers.

You are the salt of the earth. Matthew 5:13

Salt is an active influencer: It holds back decay; it stings an open wound but can help it heal quicker; it creates thirst, and it draws out the flavour in food. Salt has an influence on everything is touches. We are the salt, and we have the potential to be a positive influence through the conversations that we have.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

Do you remember a time when you felt a bit low, questioned a decision, or doubted your own efforts? How good did it feel to talk with someone who boosted your confidence or lifted your spirits? The ability to make someone feel good, feel positive or feel better, is a wonderful trait to have, and it starts with grace and salt.

We are surrounded by people who are hurting; troubled souls with anxiety and fears, all looking for a little help, a little hope, and a lot of understanding. They do not need unnecessary platitudes. They need necessary answers.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you in your conversations so that you can spread a little bit of God’s grace into someone else’s life.
