Reflecting Christ

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:23

During the course of your working life, you may have had the pleasure of having a great boss, and also your fair share of challenging ones. When it comes to the work that you do, the attitude of a manager can have a big influence on your own attitude to the job.

We all like to be treated with respect, but it is not always the reality of life, whether it is in the workplace, the club you belong to or the organisation you help with. In all of our interactions, human nature pushes us toward being reactive to how others treat us, but this is not God’s way. How we act, or react, towards others, should not reflect their attitude toward us; it should reflect the attitude of Christ.

Wherever it is that we are placed, we are to work heartily, as for the Lord because we are Kingdom workers and ambassadors of Christ, and we represent a higher authority at all times.

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14-15

Do not misinterpret this as lying down and letting others walk over you. Instead, you are lifting yourself above the attitude of others, to bring glory to the Lord Jesus – the one who took the form of a servant and humbled himself by becoming obedient to the Father.

Christians carry the name of Christ, and everything we do should be done in a way that brings honour to his name.
