Choices, Encouragement

Out With The Old

Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Colossians 3:10

New things are something that most of us enjoy getting, wearing or using. Something as simple as putting on a new item of clothing can actually give you a little boost because it makes you feel good, and feeling good does you a world of good.

‘Discard the old and dress in the new’ is Paul’s message to the Colossians. In the previous verse he said, Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices.” In verse 11 he mentions notable differences to be discarded, saying, “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free.” Simply put, the Christian is encouraged to put off deceit and put on truth; put off division and replace it with unity; come together in new practices and live in the freedom that Christ provided.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.

2 Corinthians 5:17 / Isaiah 43:18 / Ezekiel 36:26

We are to be renewed in knowledge, which means throwing out the old way of thinking and putting on the mind of Christ. Clothing ourselves in the new things of God does more that give us a little boost; it makes us feel spiritually alive.

Prayer: Father, help me to discard all the old things that hinder my walk with you. Clothe me in all things new that I might reflect the image of Christ, and bring honour to your name. Amen.
