And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you. 1 Thessalonians 4:11
It came to Paul’s attention that some members of the church were not walking in a manner worthy of their calling. They were getting involved in situations that were none of their concern, and not for the greater good. Paul had to address the matter again in his second letter, saying, “we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies”. This is not how we should be seen and it in no way brings glory to God.
Jesus also warned about being judgemental of the ‘wrongs’ we perceive in others – “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” We are not called to be meddlers; we are called to serve the Lord, for the glory of God.
We are to aspire to live quietly, not in conflict but in peace with one another. In 1974, a guy called Nick Lowe wrote a song. The world seemed wicked and he was searching for light in the darkness. He was looking for hope but found pain, hatred and misery. He asks, “Where are the strong and who are the trusted, and where is the harmony, sweet harmony?” And then comes the question that tugs at him the most:
“What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?”
There is enough conflict, pain and misery in the world without Christians adding to it. Our main concern should be making sure that our own lives are right with God. We all have failings, which means that we all need some understanding.
Our aim should be to have a character that draws people to God; one that shows love, strives for harmony, and is full of kindness and respect.
