Encouragement, God's Love, Promises

Unshakeable

For the mountains may depart and hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord. Isaiah 54:10

God’s promises hold so much comfort and reassurance in times of change and uncertainty. I think of the words written by Edward Mote – “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” Everything around us changes and there are very few things that feel secure. Insecurity keeps us on edge so we tend to seek out those things that provide stability.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

In creation, we look at the mountains and the commanding presence that they have right across the earth – The Andes, Tian Shan, the Rockies, the Himalayas and the Alps, to name but a few, but even of these majestic sculptures, the Lord suggests their ephemeral nature. They can be shaken, they can erode and split, they can crumble and fall. What can never be shaken is God’s steadfast love. It does not erode over time, and His covenant of peace will never crumble and fall.

His oath, his covenant, his blood, support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

This is the reassurance that we never let go of: Through all of life’s uncertainty, we have the constant love and calming presence of the Lord, which he will never take away.
