For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be held in awe above all gods. 1 Chronicles 16:25
No other being, alive or dead, compares to our God, and no other god comes anywhere close to being in the vicinity of comparable.
A tree is cut down and fashioned by a craftsman. It has to be carried, for it cannot walk. It is decorated with silver and gold and set in place with hammer and nails. It cannot speak, for it has no breath. Jeremiah 10:3-5 summarised.
You feel the emptiness and the futility of this practice and yet, all around the world, gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell* are being created and worshipped. Inanimate objects that feel nothing, give nothing, do nothing. (*Deut 4:28)
We worship a God who is not blind. We worship a God who is not deaf. We worship a God who is not mute. Our God lives and moves and speaks! He hears our cries and surrounds us with his presence. He feels everything that we feel; he gives freely and generously out of his abundance, and he never stops ‘doing’, for he is constantly working on our behalf.
Our God is great and we should praise him greatly. We stand in awe because he truly is an awesome God. He is the LORD, and there is no other.
