Generosity – A Pleasing Habit

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. Proverbs 19:17

Living generously is about far more than money; it’s about being generous with whatever the Lord has blessed you with; it’s about being generous of spirit.

Don’t hide your talents where no-one can see them, for they were given to be used and through them you can bless others. Don’t be stingy with kindness and thoughtfulness, and don’t hold back on encouragement and support. Be generous with your compassion and your forgiveness. There is no denying, of course, that it is hard to give in situations where there is no thanks, but Jesus teaches that we should:

Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat/hurt/abuse you. Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as you Father is merciful. LUKE 6

Being generous of spirit is not always easy, but it is how God is asking us to live, and although the idea of generosity is simple to understand, it could well be the most difficult spiritual habit to live out.

When we do live it out in the way the Lord intended, it becomes ‘a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God’. And [in his pleasure] God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.’ Phil 4:18,19
