Perfect Unity
“The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one.” John 17:22
The Lord Jesus had sent the disciples out to spread the truth of the gospel to everyone who would listen. So, when Jesus prayed this prayer, he was not only visualizing his current followers but every single person who would come to know him as Saviour and Lord.
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one…”
The Lord’s desire was that every believer would be united together in him. He wanted unity and a oneness among his people, as he said in his teaching, “I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.”
The union of the Trinity has a power like no other and a strength that nothing can break; Jesus wants that same power and strength for his people. The importance of it is such that he mentions ‘being one’ four times in his prayer. The Lord wants us united because, as Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, ‘And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will with stand him – a threefold cord is not quickly broken.’ We are stronger together than we are apart. And the Lord has gifted his glory to us:
“that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”
Division weakens the message of the gospel but perfect unity in Christ enables us to demonstrate the perfect love of the Father which brings healing to all who are broken.
