Code of Conduct

To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. _{Proverbs 21:3}

Sacrificing was something that the Jewish people of bible times new well, for it was part of their worship to, and of, the Lord. The danger is, when complacency sets in and worship becomes simply ritualistic, the true meaning of it gets lost. Yahweh brought this to the attention of his people:

“For I desired mercy and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” _{Hosea 6:6 (KJV)}

Sacrificing to God and bringing an offering to him was, and is, important but there is something more, something deeper that he requires. Half a century later and Jesus brings our focus back to this truth.

“For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matter of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness.” _{Matt 23:23}

The Pharisees had tithing down to a fine art but they had forgotten the true essence of what it meant to worship God. We too can get so entangled in the ritual of Christianity that we lose the core aspect of worship, as service to God. He wants us to do what is right and to treat others fairly and honestly; call it the Christian Code of Conduct.

With a clearer understanding of what God requires of us, we can give Him what he deserves from us.
