When Opportunity Knocks

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

Proverbs 3:27

Hebrews 13:16 also reminds us not to neglect doing good and sharing what we have, ‘for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.’ A simple act of goodness brings pleasure to our Father in heaven. We all have the ability to do good because as children of God we have a wealth of goodness within us that has been seeded by the Spirit. This goodness needs to be evident and today’s scripture encourages us not to withhold it.

Speaking of the LORD God, psalm 84 tells us that ‘no good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.’ The Lord does not hold back his gifts from us and we should not hold back in giving to others when it is in our power to do it.

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Gal6:10).

Don’t get hung up on the words ‘those to whom it is due’. Most of the time you will know the person you are helping and you will have a rough idea of their circumstances. Other times you may find God directing you toward a need that you can fill. Is it for us to judge if that person deserves our kindness? The wisdom is in following God’s word to do good, not in the judgement of the deserving.
