Lessons from Jesus

The Question

John 11:25 – “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

This is the fifth of the seven ‘I AM’ statements of Jesus, recorded by John, which again portrays the glorious hope of Life in Christ; Life, that He wants to give to every one of us:

  • I am the bread of Life – John 6:35
  • I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will have the light of Life – John 8:12
  • I am the door… I came that they may have Life and have it abundantly – John 10:9
  • I am the good shepherd; I lay down my Life for the sheep – John 10:15
  • I am the resurrection and the Life – John 11:25
  • I am the way, the truth and the Life – John 14:6

Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live – the glorious hope is that the death of this earthly, physical body, cannot and will not extinguish the life we have in Christ. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” Notice the tense ‘has passed’, which tells me that the moment I believed, death no longer had any power because I now possessed everlasting life in Jesus my Saviour. This is why Paul could repeat with absolute confidence, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

Everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die – so that there is no doubt whatsoever in what he is saying, Jesus says it twice, just slightly rephrased. Believing is Life because your spirit has been given the Life of the Father and the spirit shall never die. “Do you believe this?”

Jesus is asking the question because believing is the key. We can hear the truth and debate the truth but nothing changes until we actually believe the truth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

It is this belief in Him that brings us joy, that brings us comfort, that brings us hope and ultimately – gives us LIFE.
