Sweet Aroma

2 Corinthians 2:14

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

The sweet smell of incense on the alter was commanded by God. Over and over we read in Exodus of the spices for the anointing oil and the fragrant incense that Aaron would burn. The aroma that went up was pleasing to God. Likewise, the offering on the alter of Calvary was also fragrant; “as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Eph.5:2).

There is nothing as sweet as the name of Jesus. As Lela B. Long wrote:

Jesus is the sweetest name I know,
And He’s just the same as His lovely name,
And that’s the reason why I love Him so;
Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.

Every day we have the opportunity to spread the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. This to me is such a beautiful image. The bride in the Song of Solomon is a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. We are the bride of Christ and we carry the sweet aroma of Him everywhere we go.

Let us trust in God’s guidance as He leads us to those who need to know His Name.
