Romans

Follow the Rules

Romans 13:1

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

When I read this verse, it made me smile because of our current situation regarding Covid-19. With changing regulations from one week to the next and periodic restrictions in varying sectors, it’s hard to keep up. From the threat of a pandemic at the start of the year to the realisation of the devastating consequences, we have found ourselves in the middle of a perfect storm. Governments around the world are trying their best to deal with an unpredictable event.

Not everyone agrees with the unfolding strategies, which has led to frustration and belligerence exasperating the situation. Rules are flaunted for self interest and the vulnerable continue to suffer.

The bible teaches that we should fear God and honour the governing authorities. Peter also spoke about this and said, be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him’. All authority comes from God and those that exist have been instituted by Him, therefore, we need to respect those in leadership above us. The only exception to this is when man’s laws are in opposition to God’s sovereign commands. This is one of reasons why we need to pray for our leaders.

I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
