Laws of Nature

Proverbs 8:23-25

Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth… before the mountains had been shaped.

Wisdom is truth, wisdom is righteous, wisdom is justice. If you want to understand the importance of wisdom, read the whole of Proverbs 8. Wisdom was so important to God that He brought it forth before the creation of the universe. Proverbs 3 tells us, “The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew”.

The wisdom of God… He set the laws of nature in place; He established the rules of the universe and engineered them into His design. ‘He made firm the skies above, he established the fountains of the deep, he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command’ (v28,29).

The wisdom of man… Scientists have studied the laws of nature and physics for hundreds of years and have concluded that the universe operates according to laws. Physicist Paul Davies comments,

“…to be a scientist, you had to have faith that the universe is governed by dependable, immutable, absolute, universal, mathematical laws of an unspecified origin… and that these laws won’t fail. I have asked my colleagues why the laws of physics are what they are? …The favourite reply is, ‘There is no reason they are what they are–they just are.'”.

Even the most intelligent in the world can still be blinded to true wisdom. As Warren Wiersbe says, ‘Biblical wisdom has little if any relationship to a person’s IQ or education, because it is a matter of moral and spiritual understanding. It has to do with character and values; it means looking at the world through the grid of God’s truth’.

Seek wisdom, ‘for whoever finds me finds life and obtains favour from the Lord’ (v35).
